What drew 拉斐尔·格罗尔姆斯,24岁 to 澳门线上赌场 was its reputation for academic excellence 和 commitment to veterans. But, he confesses, it was also the prospect of experiencing winter 在 Northeast. Grollmus, who served nine years 在 United States Marine Corps, had often been stationed in countries 在 Middle East 和 Southeast Asia 和 was ready for a break from heat, 他说. “I honestly like the cold—和 I really like seasons. 季节 在纽约中部 都非常漂亮.”
From Military Experience to Civilian Career
Grollmus had first heard about Syracuse when he was growing up in Ohio, but it wasn’t until he started thinking about applying his 9/11后的退伍军人法案福利 toward an education that would help him parlay his military experiences into a civilian career that Syracuse really came into focus. “I did some research 和 learned how much 澳门线上赌场 supports veteran 和 military-connected students—和 that it has a great forensic science program, too.” Syracuse was the obvious choice, 他说.
Grollmus’ interest in forensics was first inspired during his military service, when he had the opportunity to work as a forensic analyst. 在锡拉丘兹,他 主修法医学 和 心理学 在 文理学院 和 particularly enjoyed courses he took in forensic pathology 和 chemistry. Grollmus appreciated the support 和 mentorship of professors who were also experienced professionals 在ir fields. “The faculty were really fantastic,” Grollmus says. “One of my professors, Professor Grenier, had been a state trooper in New York. He taught a course on crime scene investigation that was really interactive 和 really fun—he was so down to earth.”
Welcoming Community 和 Supportive Services
Grollmus found the University community to be very welcoming. “Everyone wants to see you succeed—they want you to do the best that you can,” he explains. He saw this spirit of support manifested 在 National Veterans Resource Center at the Daniel 和 Gayle D’Aniello Building (NVRC), which houses a range of veteran support programs. “The NVRC is such an amazing building —you won’t find anything like it anywhere else. The program here for veterans is top-notch, like this building is top-notch.”
I feel like faculty appreciate that 和 reciprocate by being accommodating, helpful 和 underst和ing of different needs that some veteran students may have.

Grollmus also felt supported 在 relationships he made with other students 和 faculty. “Many professors are very appreciative of veterans,” 他说—attributing this to the maturity he feels veterans often bring to the classroom. “The military is great preparation for college—it teaches time management 和 work ethic. I feel like faculty appreciate that 和 reciprocate by being accommodating, helpful 和 underst和ing of different needs that some veteran students may have.”
Engaged 在 Present 和 Looking to the Future
While at Syracuse, Grollmus engaged 在 community beyond academics. He worked 在 NVRC in a liaison role, helping connect other student veterans to resources 和 programs. He cheered for the Orange at a couple games 和 joined the 户外俱乐部 探索这个地区. One highlight, 他说, was a trip to the 阿迪朗达克公园 several hours north of Syracuse.
Ultimately, Grollmus aspires to work for the FBI or the Secret Service. But when he graduated in May, it was with an acceptance to Syracuse’s forensic science master’s degree program. 他在考虑下一步, he’s grateful to have an option that would allow him to extend his time at Syracuse, 和 enjoy the seasons of Central New York, 再久一点.
